Winter Mountaineering

Under snow and ice the British mountains are a beautiful but hazardous
place to be unless you’re well versed in safe and efficient winter travelling skills.
From January through to March I provide winter mountaineering guiding and
instruction:

For hill walkers I run an introductory course in winter skills which include ice
axe and crampon use, navigation and avalanche awareness in the winter
environment.

For the climbers there’s introductory and intermediate courses preparing you
for the rigours and joys of winter climbing, looking at everything from snow
belay construction to efficient stance management.

If its guiding you are after then I can remove the doubts and ensure a great
day out from Lakeland scrambles, winter Munros, classic ridges or your first
steep ice route. I regularly operate in both Eastern and Western Highlands
(where good winter conditions are most reliable) and guide wherever your
objectives lie!

“After meeting John on a course Tim and I decided to book John for some winter climbing in Scotland. We had both done some rock climbing and were keen to see what all the fuss was about. John 's time was spent restraining us pair of loonies and making sure we were taking on board the vital skills and knowledge required to remain safe whilst in the mountains during winter. Tim and I came out the other end safer, wiser and a lot more respectful of winter climbing.

John took us through the basics and gauged our climbing experience well, allowing us to attempt climbs in harsh conditions that I would never have attempted if it weren't for our training. It was five days of fun and learning which is a great result.

We are looking to book John again this year and hope we can build on what we have learnt.
Overall a top bloke and great guide.”

“Dear John,
Just a few lines from Sharon and I to say thank you for the guiding you have given us over the years.
All of the winter days we have spent together have been spectacular.

Pinnacle Ridge, Dorsal Arête, Carn Mor Dearg Arête, the Aonach Eagach Ridge, have I forgotten some? Ah yes Ill Crag and of course Broad Stand. I still remember the way you hopped up the crux then back down again to get something I dropped and hopped back up again as if it wasn’t a grade 3 at all! True rock monkey!

What I like in particular is your very professional attitude towards our safety. I have always, without exception, felt you have looked after us very well indeed. I know we need a little more attention and care than some of your other guests. I know we have some “unorthodox” methods but you don’t make us feel inadequate and you give us the required applause and encouragement when necessary. Your sense of responsibility is noticeable and appreciated.

Very kind regards
Andy and Sharron”
